The BRICS bloc may welcome its first South American member during the 2025 summit in Rio de Janeiro. Brazil will host the 17th summit on July 7-8, where expansion and de-dollarization efforts will top the agenda. Consensus among all 10 current members remains required for any policy advancement.

Colombia emerges as a leading candidate to break the continent’s absence from BRICS membership. The alliance currently includes no South American nations among its Core members or 13 partner countries. This potential expansion signals growing geopolitical shifts in global economic alliances.
